Muhammad Ibn Abi-Hudhayfah, the son of Abu-Hudhayfah Ibn یtbah Ibn Rabiؤh Inb àbd Shams Ibn àbd Manaf Al-Ghurashi, was a Companion of the prophet of Islam, Muhammad. He was a cousin of Mu'awiyah Ibn Abi-Sufyan and was reared and bred by the Third Caliph یthman Ibn àffan.
Nevertheless, he disliked both of them and supported àli Ibn Abi-Talib. He played a major role in the rebellion of the Egyptian people against the Third Caliph and following the expulsion of یthman's governor from Egypt, he governed that important province for a while.
Though Muhammad Ibn Abi-Hudhayfah's rule over Egypt is certain; the way he came to power, the duration of his rule and his end is highly ambiguous and contradictory in historical records. In this article, while presenting the most significant records on this case, it has been tried to highlight what is more likely to be nearer to truth.
