The recording of historical events has always been one of the primary concerns of historians, and various methods have been employed for this purpose, one of which is *maqtal-writing* (martyrdom literature). Maqtal-writing refers to the recording of details and reports concerning the martyrdom of prominent figures, particularly the Infallible Imams (peace be upon them). Among these events, the tragedy of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) are considered the most prominent and influential. The book *Rawdat al-Shuhada* by Mulla Husayn Kashifi is one of the most famous and, at the same time, controversial works in this field, recounting the events of Ashura. Given the importance of this book and the references made to it, examining the conformity of its reported accounts with earlier sources is essential. This study seeks, through an analytical approach, to compare the virtues (manaqib) reported in *Rawdat al-Shuhada*, particularly those concerning Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), with early hadith sources and the verses of the Holy Qur’an in order to assess the validity of their attributions.
Due to its widespread influence among the general public and its profound impact on shaping religious beliefs and mourning rituals, *Rawdat al-Shuhada* has consistently attracted attention. Nevertheless, some scholars have raised doubts regarding the historical accuracy and authenticity of certain narrations contained in it. The inconsistency of some reports with primary sources further underscores the necessity of conducting a systematic study to compare these accounts. Relying on a scientific methodology and through comparison with authoritative hadith sources as well as references to the verses of the Holy Qur’an, this research aims to present a clearer picture of the degree of reliability of the book’s content.
The primary objective of this study is to compare the accounts of virtues mentioned in Kashifi’s *Rawdat al-Shuhada*, focusing on narrations related to Imam Husayn (peace be upon him) and the other Infallible Imams (peace be upon them), with Qur’anic verses, examining their possible occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul), and early hadith sources.
This article adopts a descriptive-analytical approach. In the descriptive stage, the reports and virtues related to the Imams (peace be upon them), especially Imam Husayn (peace be upon him), are extracted and categorized from *Rawdat al-Shuhada*. Subsequently, these accounts are carefully examined and compared with the verses of the Holy Qur’an and early hadith sources. In the analytical stage, the conformity of these narrations is evaluated based on Qur’anic and hadith evidence, and their attribution to early sources is critically discussed.
This research is based on primary and authoritative hadith sources from both Shi‘i and Sunni traditions. The theoretical framework of the study rests on the premise that the virtue-related narrations in *Rawdat al-Shuhada* should be evaluated according to scholarly standards and through reference to reliable sources, and that the mere transmission of a narration in a single book does not constitute definitive proof of its authenticity.
The main section of the article is devoted to the extraction, classification, and comparison of the virtue-related reports transmitted in *Rawdat al-Shuhada*. In this regard, these reports are examined in light of Qur’anic verses and early hadith sources. Finally, the findings of the study are presented, followed by an analysis of the possible reasons behind the credibility of some narrations and the lack of credibility of others.
The results of this research indicate that *Rawdat al-Shuhada* contains a collection of reports and narrations that demonstrate varying degrees of conformity. Based on the conducted analysis, some of the virtues reported in *Rawdat al-Shuhada* correspond with verses of the Holy Qur’an.
This means that certain narrations either directly refer to the occasions of revelation of verses revealed concerning the Imams (peace be upon them) or offer interpretations of Qur’anic verses that align with their virtues. In addition to their Qur’anic basis, some of these virtues are also found in early hadith sources. However, another group of virtues reported in *Rawdat al-Shuhada* is neither found in early hadith sources nor possesses any Qur’anic foundation. These findings demonstrate that although *Rawdat al-Shuhada* is regarded as an influential work in explaining the event of Ashura and the virtues of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), like any other historical work, it requires critical examination and comparison with reliable sources and scholarly methods.
