Abstract

Henry Carbone (1903-1978 AD) was one of the most prominent western researchers about Iranian Islamic philosophical traditions. After him, Shiite studies in France followed different paths. Mohammad Ali Amirmoazi is currently a prominent representative of one of those paths. Iranian Islam was published in 1971, and Amir Moazi defended his doctoral thesis titled "The Divine Guide to Early Shiism" in 1991. Therefore, our basic question in this article is what effect did Henry Carbone's approach in the study of Shiism have on Amir Moazi's approach and view to the issue of Shiism, especially its primary nature? Therefore, in order to understand the first steps of Shia studies of Mohammad Ali Amir Moazi, it is necessary to organize a research with the method of comparative study between his opinions in his doctoral thesis and the content of the outstanding work of Henry Carbone. It seems that despite Amir Moazi's emphasis on the use of historical methods in the study of Shiism, especially early Shiism, which is one of the differences between his approach and Henry Carbone's, one can hear a wide echo of Carbone's opinions in Amir Moazi's work; Using common terms, emphasizing the commonalities of Christianity and Shiite Islam, examining the historical roots of Shiism and avoiding reducing Shiism to a political issue can be considered as such influences.
