Abstract

The proximity of Tabriz to the Caucasus and the Ottoman Empire turned it into a way for the transit of goods from Iran to Europe, and made Tabriz merchants rich and turned Tabriz into a gateway for the entry of modernist ideas into Iran. Due to the continuous trade of Tabriz with the Caucasus and Ottoman regions, the merchants of Tabriz were more influenced by modernism than other Iranians. Iran's economic backwardness, along with the competition of Iranian businessmen on domestic and foreign markets, prompted a number of businessmen to create a transformation in the economic body of the country by using western methods and technology, which can be interpreted as modernization. These activities started from the Naseri period and continued during the Mozaffari period and after the constitution. In the shadow of these measures, Tabriz became famous as a leading city in modernizing and establishing modern institutions in the contemporary history of Iran. Considering economic modernization as the subject of this research, the question that arises is: What measures did Tabrizi merchants take in the field of commercial and industrial modernization? The hypothesis of the research is that Tabrizi's modern businessmen realized the need to change the old ways and tried to modernize them. The findings of the research show that Tabrizi merchants along with other Navandish merchants took measures such as establishing new business establishments, establishing new industries to break economic dependence and earn more profit since the time of Naseruddin Shah. This research was descriptive-analytical.
