The Role of Religious belief in the Historiography The Report of Uljaytu's Conversion to Shiiism in the Persian Historical Sources

Abstract

After the Mongol conquest of Iran, the most important cultural transmission among the rulers was the conversion from Shamanism to Islam. Meanwhile, the conversion of Ghazan and Uljaytu from Sunnite to Shiite was a influential event that caused many cultural, social and political consequences. After the conversion, Uljaytu ordered the Shiite rituals to be practiced and missionary activities to be performed. This conversion and its aftermath social changes have been reported in various methods in the Persian historical sources, This article by exerting the description method on the basisi of librarian sources aims to answer to this question that how the religious belief and the intentions of the above mentioned historians or the religious atmosphere influenced their historiography of these events. The findings show that the historians bias had a direct effect in their account of these events. Some historians reported these events in details, some reported them briefly and some neglected to report them. It seems that the manner of their accounting was under their religious bias and these approaches had a significant influence in the historical books today, which the Sunnite's approach has been considered as the main source in the study of Uljaytu's conversion to Shiism.
