Abstract

The process of the exegesis of the Shiite belief by the Shiite Imams is of significance in the analysis of the Shiite history of idea. The Taqīya had a vital role in the comprehension, analysis and explanation of this process. Not only in the explanation of the Imams' virtues, the Shiite Imams had to exert the Taqīya in exploring of some sensitive injunctions which had a relationship to the doctrine of Imamate in many cases due to the historical limitations. In this study, we try to interpret the role of Taqīya in explanation of the injunction of fast of Āshūrā day on the basis of the historical data and tradition and biographical (rijāl) sources. For this interpretation, a specific kind of Taqīya is defined and the traditions were investigated in their historical context. According to this study, during the Umayyad period, the Imams had considered three elements of the audiences' belief, residence and time and addressed some excellence for this practice. After the inauguration of Abbasid dynasty which the historical limitation decreased, the Imams withdrew the Taqīya and condemned the fast of Āshūrā day.
