Analysis of tactics of movafaghbellah Abbasi(d.278 A.H) to quell the revolt of Sahib al-Zanj(255-270A.H)

Abstract

The revolt of slaves and blacks led by Sahib al-Zanj against the Abbasid caliphate and the joining of other groups of people to them is one of the important events of the Turkish era in the second half of the third century AH. The Zangians repeatedly defeated the forces of the Caliphate, but in the end, Talha bin Mutawakel, known as Mowaffaq, was able to defeat the Zangians during a three-year war of attrition and put an end to their their long fifteen year rule revolt. In this article, in a descriptive-analytical method and with reference to ancient sources, successful tactics against the owner of the ring and the reasons for its success are examined. Based on the findings of this successful study, by examining the reasons for the failure of previous commanders and even himself in the war with the Zangians from 267 AH (880C), he tried to use the best possible methods to overthrow the Sahib al-Zanj revolt. The most prominent successful tactics were; Avoid being captured by the terrible ambushes of the Zangians and providing the necessary military equipment of the day such as warships and modern boats and boats for fighting in swamps, rivers, Who had fallen into the hands of the Zangians and returned them to their families and gained public trust through the repair of roads, bridges and the development of trade in the areas taken back from the supporters of Sahib al-Zanj.
