Abstract

After the establishment of the Abbasid Caliphate, the two currents of Shu'ubiyya and anti-Shu'ubiyya movements in the Islamic world came into conflict with each other. The Shu'ubiyya referred to the historical background and ancient civilization of Iran and sought to promote their political and social status in the new regime. the anti-Shu'ubiyya movement, which was considered an extension of Umayyad thought, sought to instill the idea of Arab supremacy over non-Arabs by losing its former political and social status. This research seeks to reconstruct the intellectual foundations of the anti-Shu'ubiyya movement in early Islamic Iran based on the views of Ibn Qutaybah, The serious supporter of this idea. The reason for choosing Ibn Qutaybah as the representative of the anti-Shu'ubiyya movement is the persistence of his book of Fazl al-Arab, which contains a complete formulation of the principles that movement. Al-Jahiz is also one of the greatest thinkers of the anti-Shu'ubiyya movement but his related major books have not survived. The results show that the intellectual foundations of the anti-Shu'ubiyya movement based on Ibn Qutaybah's views, have two central axes: proving the superiority of the Arab people over other ethnic groups and proving the low social, political and historical position of Iranians, each based on several principles.
