Content Analysis of Mut’ah Certificates from the Qajar Period

Abstract

As primary sources, documents play a major role in historical studies. In this regard, Mut’ah certificates, which are religious documents originating from Islamic Jurisprudence, have specific principles and a framework and present a great deal of information on the culture, society, economy, and customs of people from the past. The main question of this study is, what themes and contents do the Mut’ah certificates from the Qajar period hold? The main claim is that Mut’ah certificates from the Qajar period were influenced by religious and customary law and drawn up according to individuals’ social status. A content analysis of these documents and the influence of religious law was deemed necessary to prove or reject the aforementioned claim.As primary sources, documents play a major role in historical studies.
