The Link between Imperial Nationalism and the Millennium of Ferdowsi during Pahlavi I Period

Abstract

The millennium of Ferdowsi and its celebrations in 1934 is one of the most significant appearances of nationalism during the reign of Pahlavi I that was conducted by the Shah’s interfere himself and his most important cultural and political men, and was accompanied by the opening of Ferdowsi’s new tomb in Tus. This international event also started a new era in the area of Shahnameh studies in and outside the country with the goal of reinforcement imperial nationalism in the national level. The main question of the present study is that to investigate the reasons and process of holding the millennium of Ferdowsi and recognition the link between this event with imperial nationalism on the basis of the original sources from the Pahlavi I period. Based on the theory of the present research, this event was one of the main appearances of nationalism during the period of Pahlavi I, and the original sources of the period which their results have been illustrated in the paper, clearly show that the Pahlavi state tried deeply to reinforcement its imperial nationalism ideology by celebrating the millennium of Ferdowsi, and to introduced Shahnameh as a historical evidence of Royalism among Iranians during their whole history.
