Abstract

The Messenger of God (PBUH) in the sixth year of AH and after concluding the peace treaty of Hudaybiyyah, sent letters to the kings of the powerful governments of that time in order to convey the mission and call them to Islam. This event has been criticized by many thinkers and researchers. One of the leading Islamologists of the twentieth century is William Montgomery Watt, who, with a seemingly scientific and skeptical view while accepting the principle of this historical event, has not accepted the accuracy of the reports of Islamic history sources in this regard. Given the reputation and importance of his views in the West and Islam world and the need to become more familiar with his ideas, in this study, we try to answer the doubts that he has raised in this field with an analytical-descriptive approach. The results of this study indicate that Watt, with a material approach while inducing doubts in the sources of Islamic history and based on his hypotheses and mental imaginations and without historical citations, does not believe in the universality of the Islamic call and the universal mission of the Messenger of God .
