Through surveying the meaning of <em>Al- Asnam</em> book- the analysis of text as well as the cultural, intellectual context- this writing is to answer the question regarding the motivation of <em>Hosham e- Kalbi</em> towards the creation of such a text related to idols of ignorant Arabs at the beginning of the third century. The findings of this research reveals that <em>Ibn e- Kalbi</em> wrote this book due to Arabs’ need for developing individuality and challenging the principles of Islamic beliefs by the other religions particularly Christians in the first years of the third century After Hijrah . He has  re-manifested the history of Arabs’ idols and their idol worshiping , stabilized the rightfulness of Islamic concepts and defended prophecy, crystallized the great historical role of prophet Mohammad PBUH on the elimination of idol worshiping, compared with the other prophets and on the basis of this, he created an honorable Arabic-Islamic individuality for Arabs. تاریخ‌نگاری هشام کلبی (204ﻫ.ق.)، به‌ویژه در کتاب الأصنام به‌عنوان مسیری برای فهم تاریخ‌نگاری اسلامی در سده‌های نخستین اسلامی، همچنان شایسته بازخوانی است. این نوشتار، با رویکرد معناکاوی کتاب الأصنام و تحلیل گفت‌وگوی متن با نویسنده و نیز تحلیل بافت‌ اندیشه‌ای‌ و فرهنگی زمانۀ متن، در پی یافتن پاسخ این پرسش است که چرا کلبی در آغاز قرن سوم هجری به تولید چنین متنی در مورد بت‌های عرب جاهلی دست یازید؟ یافته‌های این پژوهش نشان می‌دهد که ابن‌کلبی متأثر از ضرورت احساس نیاز قومیّت عرب به هویت‌سازی و نیز به چالش کشیده‌شدن اصول عقاید اسلام به دستِ دیگر ادیان، به‌ویژه مسیحیان در سال‌های نخست سده سوم، کتاب الأصنام را نگاشت. او در این کتاب، ضمن بازنمایی تاریخ بت‌های عرب و بت‌پرستی آنها، به تثبیت حقانیّت الهیِ مفاهیم اسلامی و دفاع از نبوت و تبیین نقش بزرگ و تاریخی حضرت محمد(ص) در امحای بت‌پرستی در مقایسه با انبیای دیگر پرداخت و بر این اساس، یک هویت عربی ـ اسلامی غرورآفرین برای قوم عرب پدید آورد. https://hiq.bou.ac.ir/article_21538_13971e32bf381a240579d8eed87d7ace.pdf
